“Wanted to share my thoughts concerning the learning experience at The Media Arts Center and how meaningful it was to me, as I “built’ my “second career”. A year prior to retirement, after hearing the commercial spot on the radio for The Media Arts Center,  What I found was a fantastic  learning environment, a class of diverse students. (I and another were the oldest).  We brought life’s learning’s, while the younger members, showed us the power of social media. The teachers, all professionals in their area of expertise, fully capable of both teaching the  technical aspects as well as the “real world reality’ on how to be successful in this business.

All so passionate for their work, it showed as they role modeled for us those needed skills.  I was then was afforded by the school, a twelve week internship with the local AM News/Talk station.  Working the morning News show, up at 2:30a, at the station by 3:30a, real world you bet!  Sourcing, editing audio in very tight time frames, prepping the studio, working the pressure situations to whatever support the hosts needed.  A tremendous memorable experience!

I was at that time offered the opportunity to be “on-air” doing Sports Updates for the Weekend Morning New show. I then created a “demo”, worked the feedback and began “on air”…. five months after starting classes. I now do air Weekend Sports Reports, “fill-in” as a news show producer, board operator and produce/record a weekly human interest show for the weekend.  At times, as I leave the station and see the city skyline, I have to laugh, pinch myself and on-say I did it, working as a Sports Reporter at WBT Charlotte.” – Ed Billick

From Sammi Jo Francis:

“I did some research prior to graduation from UNCC and actually sat down with the The Media Arts Center. I went to a studio tour, really enjoyed the TV aspects and left excited about my future there.

Once I started, I fell in love with the industry instead of just the idea of it. Let me explain, the hard work that it took to produce a TV package or radio show was absolutely worth it. I would stay late to do a podcast that later turned into a Youtube show. I couldn’t get enough. Radio was intoxicating to me– and the television side was all I had dreamt it up to be. More than hearing my voice on a radio bit or seeing my face on camera, was honing my skills in production. I loved being able to shoot, script, edit and polish for a finished product. I wanted to know it all, I was a media sponge. I learned so much while I was there – the ins and outs are what I came to learn and exactly what I left knowing all about.

These skills continue to grow each time I shoot and produce… which is often because I’m a sports reporter and producer for WBTV- a local Charlotte affiliate. I was always encouraged to be creative and try everything at the school, and I still use the campus to update my demo and create other projects. It’s true what they say about school, you’ll get as much out of it as you’re willing to put into it and I have no doubt  that The Media Arts Center was the right choice for me and anybody serious about this field. The work isn’t easy but man, it’s fun and 100% rewarding. “

Hope this helps,
Sammi Jo Francis
